What are the different types of alopecia?

There are several different types of alopecia, but hair loss can be broadly divided into two categories: :

Androgenic alopecia — commonly known as male pattern baldness is a genetic condition that causes hair loss both in men and women as we age. By the time men reach the age of 40, about 40% would experience baldness. There is a loss of hair around your temples and the crown of your head. The hairline recedes higher with time and may eventually progress to total baldness.

In women, this type of alopecia causes generalized thinning without causing total baldness over a particular area.

Alopecia areata — it causes patchy loss of hair and mostly limited to the scalp area, but can also affect the beard or eyebrows. This type of hair loss affects as many as 6.8 million people in the U.S. and is due to the body making antibodies against its own cells. It presents early in life and affects people of all ages, both sexes, and all ethnic groups.

What causes hair loss?

The most common cause of hair loss for both men and women is heredity and immune disorders. Other less common reasons include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Thyroid disease
  • Anemia and protein loss
  • Medications
  • Excessive weight loss
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation

Traumatic injuries and scarring are the less common causes.

How is alopecia treated?

The treatment of alopecia depends upon the cause of the hair loss. Your practitioner at Inglewood Laser and Aesthetics Plus performs a complete physical and laboratory examination to know more about the cause of your loss. It includes:

  • Blood test
  • Pull test
  • Scalp biopsy
  • Light microscope

Once the cause is known, your practitioner designs a personalized treatment regimen for you. The treatment consists of medications to promote hair growth and slow the hair loss or hair transplant surgery to reverse the alopecia.

Medications

Medications available to treat hair loss include Minoxidil, an over-the-counter topical medication that prevents further hair loss. It comes in liquid or foam, and you have to rub it into the scalp daily. Finasteride is an oral prescription medication that slows down the hair loss.

Plasma rich protein (PRP)

Doctors have injected PRP into the scalp to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. According to research from 2014, PRP injections are effective in treating androgenic alopecia, which is also known as male pattern baldness.

The treatment takes about a half hour (30 minutes):

  1. We will draw a little of your blood.
  2. While you wait, we spin down the blood until it separates into its different parts. Then we collect the PRP from your blood into a shot (syringe).
  3. We inject the PRP into your scalp. Your scalp will be numb during the procedure.

Repeat treatments will depend on how well PRP works for you. Treatment will be evaluated after 6 weeks.
