Varicose Veins Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels that bulge from the surface of the skin and frequently have a cord-like appearance. They are common on the thighs, backs of the calves, or the inside of the legs.  In the U.S., about half of people older than 50 years have varicose veins, with a higher prevalence in women than men.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur as a result of damage or weakness of the valves in the blood vessels. When the valves do not function correctly, the blood leaks back and collect in the veins, causing them to bulge and become distorted (The medical term is venous insufficiency). Some factors may increase your chances of having varicose veins including:

  • Family history
  • Increasing age
  • Medical history
  • Hormonal changes
  • Obesity
  • Prolonged standing or sitting

The team at Inglewood Laser and Aesthetics Plus will do a complete physical examination, lab work, and imaging tests to determine the cause of your varicose veins to plan the right treatment for you.

Should I see a doctor about varicose veins?

You should see a doctor if the appearance of your leg is bothering you or the leg symptoms interfere with your daily activities. Some other signs and symptoms that require a consultation include:

  • Red and swollen leg
  • Sore or rash on leg
  • Bleeding from the veins
  • Discoloration of skin

Even if you have only mild symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult the team at Inglewood Laser and Aesthetics Plus, NPs  Robin Garner and Zenda Lewis will advise you of steps to prevent them from getting worse.

How are varicose veins treated?

The team at Inglewood Laser and Aesthetics Plus plans your treatment depending upon your lifestyle, the severity of symptoms, and cause of varicose veins. If you do not have severe symptoms, treatment starts with lifestyle modification and wearing compression stockings, which also halts the further progress of the disease.

In others, under ultrasound guidance, the team uses a needle to inject a liquid chemical into the vein called sclerotherapy. The compound causes the walls of the veins to stick together leading to collapse of the vessels.
